Providing recreational outlets has proven to be important to the citizens of Randolph County. In the Summer of 2007, Moberly residents overwhelmingly decided to support their park department building a new aquatic facility, among other major park improvements. The new facility is planned to open in the summer of 2009.
Another example of this commitment is the new YMCA facility that opened in 2007. The YMCA houses a six lane indoor pool, basketball court, racquetball court, fitness room, and community meeting rooms. The facility was built because of the generosity of Randolph County citizens that donated during a very successful capital campaign.
Jogging at Rothwell Park on an autumn day
One of the crowns jewels of recreation in Randolph County is Rothwell Park in Moberly, one of the largest municipal parks in Missouri. The park features over 447 wooded acres and 50 acres of lakes. Inside the park you will find the current public pool and the county fair grounds. There are also several ball fields, tennis courts, an archery range, playgrounds, and cookout shelters. Fishing is popular in the large lakes of the park. The Paul Walker Walking Trail winds through Rothwell Park around the lakes. It is used by both exercisers and casual walkers throughout the year as the Parks Department makes clearing the trail a priority in the winter. For those that want to walk indoors, the Moberly Area Community College Athletic Center contains a 1/8 mile track open to the public.
Rothwell Park is very busy during special events. The County Fair brings a carnival and many 4-H events. Special walks, runs, and bike events are staged in the park periodically to help organizations with fund raisers. The 4th of July fireworks show in the park is always a sight to see.
